چکیده

1 This study investigated the contribution of the reflected appraisal process to the ontogeny 2 of children’s self-perceptions of physical competence. Emanating from symbolic 3 interactionist thought, reflected appraisals refer to individuals’ perceptions of others’ 4 evaluations of their abilities. The influence of parents’ appraisals of their child’s 5 competence on the child’s self-appraisals was hypothesized to be mediated by parents’ 6 reflected appraisals. Data were collected from a sample of 147 sixth graders and their 7 parents in three waves over one school year. Structural equation modeling revealed that (1) 8 parents’ appraisals at Wave 1 influenced children’s reflected appraisals of parents at Wave 9 2; (2) reflected appraisals at Wave 2 influenced children’s self-appraisals at Wave 3, 10 controlling for both the child’s actual level in sport (as assessed by the child’s grade in 11 physical education) and the child’s self-appraisals at Wave 1; and (3) the influence of 12 parents’ appraisals on their child’s self-appraisals was nonsignificant when reflected 13 appraisals were controlled for. This study supported the mediational role of the reflected 14 appraisal process. The findings from this study provide a unique contribution to the sport 15

O11: Cognitive Appraisals and Social Support in Predicting Children’s Posttraumatic Stress

Cognitive appraisals of the trauma play a key role in children’s adjustment following a traumatic event, but how these appraisals develop is not well understood. Cognitive models of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) suggest that social support is a key influence on the development of appraisals, and we aimed to explore this relationship further. As predicted by cognitive models of PTSD...

The Influence of Reflected Appraisals on Middle School and High School Athletes’ Self-Perceptions of Sport Competence

This study examined the reflected appraisal process in female middle school (n = 66; M age = 12.39 – .87 years) and high school athletes (n = 88; M age = 14.70 – 1.08 years). Questionnaires assessed the athletes’ self-perceptions of sport competence and how they perceived their mothers, fathers, coaches, and teammates evaluated their ability in sport. A multiple regression analysis revealed tha...

The neural correlates of direct and reflected self-knowledge.

Socrates said that in order to lead a balanced life one must, "know thyself." In two fMRI experiments, the present study examined the mechanisms mediating two ways in which the self can be known: through direct appraisals (i.e., an individual's own self-beliefs) and reflected appraisals (i.e., an individual's perception of how others view him or her). Experiment 1 examined the common and distin...

Neural systems for reflected and direct self-appraisals in Chinese young adults: Exploring the role of the temporal-parietal junction.

OBJECTIVES Although cortical midline structures (CMS) are the most commonly identified neural foundations of self-appraisals, research is beginning to implicate the temporal-parietal junction (TPJ) in more interdependent self-construals. The goal of this study was to extend this research in an understudied population by (a) examining both direct (first-person) and reflected (third-person) self-...

Achievement goals, competition appraisals, and the psychological and emotional welfare of sport participants.

Grounded in the 2x2 achievement goal framework (Elliot & McGregor, 2001), a model was tested examining the hypothesized relationships between approach and avoidance (mastery and performance) goals, challenge and threat appraisals of sport competition, and positive and negative indices of well-being (i.e., self-esteem, positive, and negative affect). A further aim was to determine the degree to ...
